Yes and no. The phone is a quad-band GSM phone which means it will operate on cellular networks in most countries including South Africa, but the problem is that the iPhone will only work with AT&T (formerly Cingular). If you are just going to South Africa for a few days, you can use your iPhone there but will have to pay international roaming charges to AT&T. If you are moving back there permanently, you will not at the present time be able to use the iPhone with an international cell phone carrier. You should contact AT&T (www.cingular.com) for details on their international roaming plans and coverage.
Not now, but will be 3 to 6 months later.
Iphone will be only available in USA next June 29 with AT&T carrier.
iPhone first sales in Europe will start fourth quarter of this year and Apple is looking for the official carrier for Europe.
Vodafone, Orange and O2 owner Telefonica, have been competing for the right to sell the Iphone in Europe, but according to recent rumors, T-Mobile may become the iPhone’s official carrier for Europe.
